Overview

Judge Song became a judge on 11 March 2003 (three-year term) and was re-elected in 2006 (nine-year term). He has been President of the Court since 2009. He was elected President on 11 March 2009 (three-year term) and re-elected on 11 March 2012 (three-year term).

Biography

Judge Song (born 1941) began his legal career as a judge-advocate in the Korean army and later became a foreign attorney in a New York law firm.

He has served as a member of the advisory committee to the Korean Supreme Court and the Ministry of Justice leading initiatives to reform the national litigation system and the criminal justice system.

For more than thirty years, he taught as a professor of law at Seoul National University Law School. He has held visiting professorships at law schools, including Harvard, New York University, Melbourne and Wellington.

Judge Song is co-founder of the Legal Aid Centre for Women, and of the Childhood Leukaemia Foundation in Seoul, and the President of UNICEF/KOREA. He has written several publications and received the highest decoration of the Korean Government in 2011.
