How we work

Overview

We conduct preliminary examinations, investigate the crimes of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes and prosecute persons allegedly most responsible for such crimes.

Roles and responsibilities

Our office has three divisions.

Investigations Division

We are lawyers, investigators and analysts who work in teams for a particular investigation. We are responsible for:

  • receiving and analysing referrals and communications to determine whether there is a reasonable basis to investigate;
  • Conducting independent and impartial investigations into genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.

Prosecution Division

We are analysts, international cooperation experts and lawyers who are responsible for:

  • prosecuting persons allegedly most responsible for such crimes;
  • presenting cases before the judges.

Jurisdiction, Complementarity and Cooperation Division (JCCD)

We are analysts, international cooperation experts and lawyers who are responsible for:

  • advising the Prosecutor on issues of jurisdiction and admissibility;
  • determining the essential prerequisites for any investigations and prosecutions.
